Junior quarterback Avery Davis engineered three second-half scores to lead No. 5 Cedar Hill (Texas) to a 28-17 defeat of Bowie (Arlington) on Friday.
With the Longhorns trailing 11-7 to start the second half, Davis threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Sims, a 37-yard touchdown pass to Malik Orr and ran for a 68-yard touchdown.
The host Volunteers (0-2), who opened their season with a 35-0 loss to Dallas Jesuit, put an early scare into Cedar Hill (2-0), the defending state 6A-II champion.

Bowie drove 93 yards on its opening drive and quarterback Donoven Davenport ran in a 1-yard touchdown. Following a 23-yard field goal by Tony Hernandez, the Volunteers led 11-7 at the half. Davenport led Bowie with 111 yards and two touchdown runs.
The Longhorns turned the game around early in the second half after Bowie muffed the opening kickoff. Cedar Hill got the ball at the 34 and scored a few plays later on Sims’ touchdown catch.
Cedar Hill will play host next Friday to Skyline (Dallas), which improved to 2-0 with a 24-22 defeat of Martin (Arlington) on Friday.
