The Matchup: No. 23 John Carroll (Bel Air, Md.) will play host to McDonogh (Owings Mills, Md.) at 6 p.m. (ET).
John Carroll players to watch: Senior guard Kimbal Mackenzie, who is from Toronto, is a Bucknell commit. He’s joined in the backcourt by another Toronto native, senior Elijah Long, who has committed to Florida Gulf Coast. Freshman point guard Immanuel Quickley had 15 points, eight rebounds and eight rebounds in his team’s last game, a 46-44 defeat of rival C. Milton Wright (Bel Air).
McDonogh players to watch: Senior 6-9 center Evan Fisher, a Siena commit, is the team’s leading scorer. Sophomore guard Damian Chong-Qui had 18 points the last time the teams played.
What to expect: John Carroll (22-1) has won 15 of its past 16 games against McDonogh, but last time these teams met, on Dec. 23, McDonogh handed the Patriots their only loss of the season, 58-55. This time the game will be at John Carroll. Both teams are in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association’s A Conference. Expect a low-scoring affair — their game in January 2013 was a 39-37 final (see video below). The Patriots are allowing opponents less than 43 points a game and the Eagles (11-8) are giving up less than 59 points a game. It should be a good matchup between John Carroll junior power forward Michael Tertsea, who is 6-9, and McDonogh’s Fisher.
