The Matchup: No. 23 Western International plays Renaissance in the Detroit Public School League tournament championship Friday.
Western International players to watch: Junior point guard Brailen Neely is only 5-8 but is a solid team leader. Detroit Mercy commits Josh McFolley, a 6-foot guard and 6-8 post Gerald Blackshear played big in the Cowboys’ PSL semifinal win against Pershing (Detroit). McFolley had 30 points and Blackshear had 16 points and 15 rebounds. McFolley and Blackshear are both signed with Detroit Mercy and are in their first year at Western International after transferring from Mount Clemens following the coach being fired.
Renaissance players to watch: Junior 6-3 point guard Justin Turner had 17 points in his team’s 50-46 PSL semifinal defeat of Detroit East English Village. The Phoenix have risen since the transfer of guard Daryl Smith from Detroit Community. Junior center, A.J. Jackson, who is 6-7 and 285 pounds, is a physical force underneath.
What to expect: Western International (16-0) defeated Renaissance 58-41 in the regular season, but the Phoenix (11-6) have won seven games in a row.
