After starring as one of the area’s top runners during his high school days, Luke Gavigan returned to Rockland County and won the 33rd annual Bill Markiewicz Memorial Run at Bear Mountain State Park last Saturday.
The 2015 Tappan Zee graduate, now a freshman at North Carolina, finished the three-mile course with a time of 15 minutes, 52 seconds to pace the 206 total runners.
Tappan Zee alumna and 2011 graduate Cailé Kohlbrenner had the top time for the women, clocking in at 18:49. It was the Providence College graduate’s fifth consecutive championship at the event.
Monroe-Woodbury swept both the men’s (70 points) and women’s (36) races in the team scores.
The event, which features alumni of Rockland schools, is named in memory of the former Clarkstown North cross country and track coach.
Longtime Monroe-Woodbury cross country and track head coach Jim Glover, who graduated from Suffern in 1977, won the annual Bill Markiewicz award for his dedication to the sport.
