Though today’s schedule held the most significant games of the season yet, local prep softball teams, coaches and fans will have to wait one more day to play their respective regional semifinal games.

In 7A, the Tate Aggies game against Niceville has been moved to Wednesday at 7 p.m, when the Aggies will host the Eagles in the fourth meeting between the teams this season.

Coach Melinda Wyatt said Tate made the call Tuesday around 12:30 p.m., as the Aggies wanted to give their water-logged field an extra day of sunshine.

“We worked on the field in the morning, and got the standing water off,” Wyatt said. “The field was pretty sloppy, the outfield was still retaining water. I made my phone calls and made sure people knew the game had been moved to Wednesday at 7 p.m.”

But later in the afternoon, the storming returned.

“We had a gully washer come through later,” Wyatt said. “So after all the work that we did in the morning, we had to start over. We’re gonna have to play it by ear tomorrow. We’ll just have to take a look at the field and see how much water remains.”

While Tate will stick to an evening start time, other local teams will aim to get their games in earlier.

In 1A, Central will host Vernon for an afternoon game starting at 4, while Jay will host Franklin County at 5 p.m.

“Looking at Tuesday night’s forecast, it called for heavy thunderstorms,” Central coach Nick Golden said. “Anytime there is thunder in the area, you’ve got to pause the game for 30 minutes. When you’ve got (Franklin County), they’re traveling two and a half hours to play us … and then they’ve gotta drive right back.

“Wednesday is forecasting clearer weather.”

Milton and West Florida each played on the road Tuesday night and suffered shutout losses. Milton dropped a 1-0 loss at Oakleaf, while West Florida lost 6-0 to District 1-4A rival Walton.

The winners of the region semifinal games advance to the region championship games — one step away from the state tournament in Vero Beach.
