Sussex Tech put in nothing but the finest of performances at the 2015 Bob Rowe Memorial wrestling tournament, taking home the first-place trophy at the end of day two on Saturday, Jan. 10.
Tech scored 228 points to narrowly beat out the tournament’s runner-up, Polytech, who had 225.5 points, and they tied Sussex Central for the most wrestlers to place first through fourth with 10.
“We’re a good tournament team,” said Tech’s head coach Scott Layfield. “Our team is getting better and better in every tournament, and every match.”
“Overall the team is doing extremely well,” he said. “We had five in the finals and we got three champions out of it, so the coaches are happy.”
One of those championships was won by Riley Parker in the 182-pound weight class. Parker’s match against Easton’s Nolan Muganda was in the final 30 seconds and was threatening to go into overtime with a tie score of 3-3. Parker knew he had to make a move.
“I knew it was a close match, the kid was strong and a good wrestler,” Parker said. “Toward the end I was pushing the tempo, and he started to get a little winded. He took a shot and I was able to counterbalance it, hit the headlock, and put him to his back.”
Parker won the match by decision with a final score of 8-3
“Riley was out last year with a torn labrum, couldn’t wrestle, so now he’s getting back into the groove this year,” Layfield said. “He’s placed in about every tournament we’ve wrestled in. Third place in Milford, third in Battle at the Beach, third place at Delcastle, and he took first here. He’s steadily been improving.”
Parker said taking first after getting third so many times is a great confidence booster, and he wants to be on top every time he wrestles.
After the tournament ended, both Layfield and Parker immediately started looking ahead toward his team’s future matches, with only one goal in mind.
“We always got to look forward, work hard at practice, got to work hard every day, and work harder than the person that’s against you.
“It’s all about getting ready for February, for conferences, and states,” Layfield said.
