Logan Barr of Roosevelt returns a shot as he and Spenser Smith play Hunter Rockne and Luke Rockne of Yankton in a first-flight doubles match Thursday at the state tennis tourney.

Perfection is a tough standard, but three teams nevertheless escaped the first day of the boys state tennis tournament without a defeat.

Tournament favorites Lincoln and Mitchell — plus another city squad in O’Gorman — left the courts in Sioux Falls and Brandon on Thursday unscathed. Other heavy hitters, Washington and Rapid City Stevens, also are in the mix despite hiccups in No. 4 singles.

Still, the heavy lifting awaits Friday and Saturday, where there’s a palpable increase in the level of competition.

“It’s a pretty big jump. You’ve just got to remember that getting through the first day is cool, but there’s a lot more competition coming the next few days,” said Lincoln standout Kaleb Dobbs, the top-seed in No. 1 singles who followed a first-round bye with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Rapid City Central’s Michael Robidoux.

First-flight singles played out as expected, setting up third-round matchups between Dobbs and O’Gorman’s Sam Heckmann, Washington’s Nate Ackert and Mitchell’s Jacob Cersosimo, and Yankton’s Luke Rockne and Chuck Tang of Rapid City Stevens.

The marquee match today could be between four-seed Bill Trevillyan (Brandon Valley) and No. 5 Logan Barr (Roosevelt). The two split their season matches 1-1.

The second-flight singles also would have been chalk if not for No. 11 seed Nicholas Lust of St. Thomas More edging Yankton No. 6 Jason Shindler 5-7, 6-4, 10-8. Defending “two” champion — Washington’s Elliot Hartwig — moved on with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Brookings’ Dylan Rittershaus.

Hartwig could be on a collision course with Mitchell’s Beau Brown in the semis, or perhaps a championship showdown with Lincoln’s Sam Dobbs, whose only two defeats this season came against Hartwig.

For now though, the Warriors — like the rest of the field — will worry about the next match.

“Going into tomorrow everyone’s just taking one match at a time,” said Washington coach Jill Hurley. “Our goal is to get to Saturday in those championship brackets.”

A strong first day isn’t without its own takeaways, like the ability to take on the pressures of state.

“I think they handled it pretty well today,” Hurley said. “We kind of rolled through our matches and played with confidence. I don’t think they were shaken by this being the state tournament.”

In No. 1 doubles, Lincoln’s undefeated brother tandem of Kaleb and Sam Dobbs secured a third-round match against another set of siblings — Yankton’s Luke and Hunter Rockne. The rest of the field played out predictably, but in No. 2 doubles three matches pushed to a third-set, including 10-seed Madison’s hard-earned defeat of Rapid City Central 1-6, 7-6(5), 13-11.

With the state tournament playing out as an endurance test, those who won with efficiency could have an edge the rest of the way.

“I think I focused really well and played my best right away,” Kaleb Dobbs said. “I didn’t get in any trouble and was able to conserve energy.”
