APPLETON — Putting the ball in the net is the toughest part of soccer.
Jacob Teunas is making it look like it’s supposed to be easy.
The skilled senior forward delivered his second straight hat trick in conference play to keep Appleton North unbeaten in the Fox Valley Association with a hard-earned 4-2 boys’ soccer win over Appleton West Tuesday night at the Nienhaus Sports Complex.
Teunas’ scoring binge started with three goals Thursday in a 4-0 victory over Kaukauna, and he stayed hot by matching that total against the Terrors.
“I couldn’t do it without my teammates, especially Brendan Daines” said Teunas. “He’s been getting me these crosses right inside the 18. They make it easy for me. All I have to do is run on the ball and shoot. It’s pretty simple.”
With Teunas leading the charge, Appleton North fought off a challenge from the Terrors to climb to a league-leading 4-0-0 in the FVA and 6-1-0 overall.
“It wasn’t the prettiest win we’ve had, but we’ve had an incredible last couple weeks of practice,” said North coach Cody Schnese. “The guys know how to fight. They needed to do that tonight and they did. There are some errors we have to fix, but overall we fought and got the result we needed.”
Leading 2-0 at the half on goals by Teunas and Osman Bajraktarevic, the Lightning was pushed in the second half by the Terrors (0-3-1 FVA, 2-4-1 overall).
A West goal by Bailey Sweeney at the 48:21 mark cut the North lead to 2-1, but Teunas answered 12 minutes later from in close on a nice cross from Daines.
West retaliated on an Alfonso Paz goal at 75:48 to again whittle the margin to a single goal.
Teunas, though, made sure the Terrors inched no closer, scoring his final goal on a breakaway at 83:34 to lock up the win.
“On that last one, I was like, ‘I’ve got to get this ball in the net,” said Teunas. “We were only up by one and anything can happen when it’s that close. But it ended up going right to the foot and it went in the goal.”
Teunas was impressed with the fight shown by West.
“They came out tough, but we held our game,” he said. “We played smart and possessed a little bit more in the second half. When they came back, we came back, too. We showed them we were the better team and we pulled through.”
West coach Tim Stuebs felt his Terrors waited a bit too long to make their move.
“We were just outplayed in the first half by a lot,” said Stuebs. “In the second half, we evened it up and started playing a lot better. They dominated the first half and that’s when they won the game But it was a competitive game.”
