Another award to give out never hurt anyone, did it?
Well, that’s what the sports department at the Times Herald was thinking as a string of area golf tournaments are about to tee off this weekend.
The PGA has a tournament every weekend, but even that’s not enough for them. At the end of the year they also hand out the FedEx Cup – an award based on a year’s worth of success at tournaments.
It seems like a great way to keep tabs on who the summer’s top golfer is, so for the first time we are adopting that style and are introducing the Blue Water Cup.
We’ll admit, it’s not the flashiest name, so if anyone has another suggestion feel free to shoot it our way.
After the tournaments we will add up the points and give an update so everyone can keep track of where they stand. At the end of the year the winner will be announced, and we will gift the champion with a feature story on his season.
So, without further ado, here is how we will track the Blue Water Cup.
Tournaments to watch
This weekend the Port Huron Elks Invitational will be the first of five tournaments in play for the Cup.
The next will be the Inter Club, going on July 17-19. The Riggin, the most exclusive tournament this summer, will follow at Port Huron Golf Club on July 25-26.
Two invitationals will conclude the summer on the same weekend as the Port Huron Golf Club Invitational will be Aug. 5-8 and St. Clair Golf Club will be Aug. 6-8.
The point system
Get ready for some numbers.
For the three invitationals, we will divide the points up with flights in consideration. If you get first place in the first flight, you get 100 points. Second place will get 90, third will get 80 and so on.
In the second flight, the amount of points to get drop a little bit. First place in the second flight will get 90 points, second place will get 81, third will get 72 and so on as we subtract by nine.
The third flight we will subtract by eight, starting at 80 points for first place and 72 for second place. The fourth slight will start at 70 points for first and subtract by seven as second will be issued 63 points.
You’re probably catching on, but we’ll round out the flight scoring anyway.
Fifth flights will start at 60 for first place and will subtract by six for every golfer behind them. Sixth flights will start at 50 points and will subtract by five points. Seventh flights start at 40 and will subtract by four points. Eighth flights start at 30 points and subtract by three. Ninth flights start at 20 points and subtract by two. And finally, the tenth flights will start at 10 points and subtract by one.
For the Inter Club, any won match will win the golfer 20 points and a halved match will be worth 10 points.
At the Riggin, first gets 50, second gets 40, third gets 30, fourth gets 25, fifth gets 20, sixth gets 15, seventh gets 10, eighth gets eight and nine and below receive five.
There you have it, golfers. Now go out and win that Blue Water Cup.
