The Coach Sharman White Blog: Six-time state champ coach talks going for seven in a row

Sharman White is the head boys’ basketball coach at Miller Grove (Lithonia, Ga.), where he won his sixth consecutive Class AAAAA state title last season. That dominance prompted White’s former McDonald’s All-American forward Tony Parker, now a junior at UCLA, to give White the nickname “Elvis. Because he’s the greatest.” White has agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his team to his methods to his everyday life in a monthly blog.

IT’S THAT TIME!!!  Welcome back for another installment of my blog for USA TODAY Sports.

For a lot of high school programs all over the country, the post-season has arrived and it’s time to come face-to-face with the goals and dreams that were set several months ago. Although a championship is the goal of many, there can only be one and the team that outlasts every other team is the team who will be crowned.

Taking a line from the Andy Williams Christmas holiday favorite, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”

We are just coming off a solid performance in our region tournament where we secured a top seed in the state playoffs by capturing our seventh region championship in the last eight seasons. As a coach, I stress to our guys that they are not to take such an accomplishment for granted and to enjoy the moment as we begin our journey towards a seventh-consecutive state crown. There are several teams vying to dethrone us as champions and if we become complacent, we know that we will be replaced as state champions.

As teams begin to make their run at a championship, I offer the following as a way to put their championship run into perspective:

CHAMPIONS

– Eliminate Distractions

– Create Energy

– Fear Nothing

– Attack Everything

These are things that can be overlooked but if carried out can lead to some special things happening.  Good luck to everyone in the post-season and play hard till the end!

White’s Message: To be a top seed is an advantage, BUT to be the Champion, you have to BEAT EVERYBODY… #Period!”
