Harry Giles III Blog: Transferring to Oak Hill, teaming up with top recruits in college, summer plans and more

Harry Giles III missed the entire 2013-14 season recovering from ACL, MCL and meniscus tears; since then he’s dominated the AAU scene, helped lead the USA U17 and U19 teams win gold and turned in an even more dominant junior season at Wesleyan Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.). Giles, who is ranked No. 1 overall in the ESPN 100, recently announced his plans to transfer to Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) and has a top five of  North Carolina, Kentucky, Wake Forest, Kansas and Duke. Giles has agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his everyday life in a monthly blog.

Guess who’s back!

It’s your boy HG back again with another blog; I know I’ve been missing for a while, Jay Jay at USA Today calls me Hollywood, but, ya know, it’s all good I’m back for you guys now so let’s go!

The biggest news with me is that I decided to transfer to the one and only Oak Hill Academy!

Man, I’m excited to get down there later this month and do nothing but study in the classroom and get better and better every day in the gym.

It was definitely hard to leave my comfort zone back home; I’m definitely gonna miss seeing my fam every day and my Wesleyan family, especially Coach Keith (Gatlin) and my teammates!

But I know I’ve gotta look at the bigger picture and put that work in now.

I’ll be playing on a team I’ve always dreamed about playing for and against the best competition every day in practice and in games.

That’s big for me!

I will get down there later this month so I’m excited about getting settled in and getting right to work.

We just got finished up recently with AAU and I feel like we had a strong year; definitely wasn’t happy with how it ended at Peach Jam, but the whole experience there was big for me. Peach Jam is something I would want every basketball player to experience, honestly!

It’s the biggest stage and every coach is there, every court is packed to capacity and the crowd is hype. Teams are so much better by the time they get to Peach Jam, too!

That’s why making it to the Final Four the way we did was incredible! We got to play on TV and everything and it was against my boy Jay (Jayson Tatum)! We had been talking about playing against each other for the longest and that’s the one that everybody wanted to see.

Of course y’all know he got me in that one, and that was tough for me because I put a lot in to this game and we’re both crazy competitive. The bright side is that I lost to someone that earned it and cared about winning as much as I do.

Speaking of my man Jay, I’ve gotta give him a shoutout for committing to Duke. I kinda new anyway, but to see him go to the school of his dreams makes me happy for him! I know he’s gonna be dominant at the next level so watch out for him.

Of course everyone wants to know if we’re still planning to play together like we’ve been talking about and it’s definitely something that we still always talk about. He knows I’ve gotta do what’s best for me the same way he did, but Duke is a school that’s high on my list and if it works out like that it’s gonna be a problem!

We’ll see what happens with everything.

I cut my list down to North Carolina, Kentucky, Duke, Kansas and Wake Forest; and that’s in no particular order, I know how people read into everything!

Now that I’ll be going to Oak Hill I’m gonna try and get some visits in before I go; I’ll keep you posted on when that’ll be because right now I don’t know yet.

I talk to the coaches all the time, of course; I feel like we all have great relationships. Coach K always keeps me laughing, Coach Cal is cool, Coach Williams is funny, Coach Self is cool and Coach Manning is cool too. I feel like we all have great relationships, which will make my decision a lot harder.

I don’t think I’ll cut my list again; I think the next announcement will be where I’m going.

Now that my AAU season is over, I’m definitely trying to hang out with my friends and family as much as possible before school starts. I’m just gonna enjoy the Winston (Salem) life as much as possible before I leave!

I’ve actually have been gone this summer a lot more than I’ve been home so it’s good that I get this time to chill out with everybody.

I’m definitely loving this time!

OK, everybody that’s another blog down! I’ve got a lot of changes that are about to happen in my life, but it’s what’s best for me so it’s a good thing!

The next blog I’ll be telling you about what life is like on the Hill so stay tuned!
