The Opening: LSU commit Greedy Williams has formula for success -- and great nickname

BEAVERTON, Ore. — There’s something about LSU football players and nicknames. Like a good crawfish etoufee, they know how to do a nickname right in Bayou country.

There was the Tyronn “Honey Badger” Mathieu, Leonard “Buga Nation” Fournette and if he stays true to his commit, the next in line is Andraez “Greedy” Williams.

Williams, who along with quarterback Shea Patterson has helped Calvary Baptist (Shreveport, La.) win consecutive state titles, said the nickname was given to him by his aunt, who remarked on his voracious appetite for baby formula as an infant.

“My aunt kept me for a night and I guess my mom didn’t fix enough bottles ahead and so my Aunt named me ‘Greedy-Deedee’ but my mom took the Deedee out and kept it Greedy,” Williams said. “I love it. They say it’s a great DB name. It helps to be greedy as a defensive back.”

Williams, ranked among the Top 15 cornerback prospects in the Class of 2016 by 247Sports, says he owes Patterson a little payback after Wednesday’s drills at Nike’s The Opening.

“He knows I can defend a back-shoulder pass real good, so he dropped one in there on me today,” Williams said. “I have to get him back.”

Patterson is an Ole Miss commit so they likely will see each again in the Southeastern Conference.

While the temperature was unseasonable for Beaverton, in the mid 90s, it suited Williams.

“It ain’t that hot,” Williams said. “We work out in this, all day, every day.”
