Rashan Gary blog: Learning from the IMG loss, the Michigan trip and a big plate

Rashan Gary made the American Family Insurance ALL-USA preseason team and is the No. 1 player in 247Sports.com’s composite football rankings for the class of 2016. The senior defensive lineman at Paramus Catholic (Paramus, N.J.) helped lead his team to a state runner-up finish last year and has not committed to a college. He’s  giving USA TODAY HSS exclusive access to his world by chronicling his season at Paramus Catholic, which is 3-4 but still ranked No. 2 among the New Jersey non-public schools after a 28-20 loss last week to No. 6 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.).

Hey, this is Rashan Gary, or Big Rah. I feel at this point, we can still win at state. We’re hungrier than ever and everybody wants to win. We’re tired of the taste of losing.

Our trip down to IMG was a business trip and we had one goal in mind, to play a tough game and hopefully come out with the win. Everybody was focused on the game. As a team, we played with heart, but we made a couple of mistakes. We go back to practice this week to correct those so we don’t make them the next game. I didn’t get a chance to talk to Coach Harbaugh, but I saw him and that he came down to the game to support me and my teammates was cool.

My visit to Michigan (on Sept. 25) was good. I’ve been there three times before. I already had a good idea how it was. I just needed to go there and check out the business school, a place where I plan on spending the majority of my time because hopefully that will be my major. I wanted to get a good feel for how people were at the campus and I accomplished that while I was there. There were a lot of nice people. You ask them a question and they don’t mind it. Here in Jersey, a lot of people won’t say hi until you say hi. I saw Chris (Partridge, the former coach at Paramus, now an assistant at Michigan). We just talked about my high school season, just catching up and stuff.

My next visit is to Auburn on Nov. 28 for the Alabama game. My goal is to have my (college) decision by the Under Armour Game (Jan. 2). Right now, I don’t know if I’ll have my mind made up, but that’s my goal.

It takes me an hour or more to get to Paramus, but my mom drives and I can sleep anywhere, to be honest. I’m a pretty good student. I made a promise to my mom that I wouldn’t bring home any C’s and I’ve kept up with it.

When I have free time, I try to spend as much time as I can with my nephews (one is seven months old and the other is 11) and my family, that’s about it. I try playing the Xbox a little. I think I can sing, but my mom says I can’t. I like to listen to Fetty Wap (a rapper from Paterson, N.J.). The last movie I saw was Pixels.

I love to eat. Right now, I’m a little heavier than usual. I’m around 300. During the season, my weight goes up and down, but the lightest this season I’ve been is 285 in the third game. I’ll usually have a breakfast sandwich with hash browns for breakfast, then three sandwiches, a Gatorade, a fruit snack and water for lunch. For dinner, my favorite meals are my mom’s jambalaya or her fried chicken. I like her fish too. I don’t know — I just like to eat.

That’s about it for now. Follow me on Twitter at @RashanGary33
