OWENSBORO, Ky. – Melissa Collins and Abby Wilder both went 2 for 3 with two RBIs as the Mercy Academy softball team beat Johnson Central 7-1 on Friday in a consolation-bracket game of the Worth/KHSAA State Tournament at Jack C. Fisher Park.
No. 10-ranked Mercy (25-14) advanced to face the East Jessamine-Central Hardin winner at 6 p.m. EDT Friday.
The Jaguars finished with 11 hits, as Jordan Vorbrink and Lexi Ray also had two hits apiece. Vorbrink and Collins had back-to-back RBI doubles in the second inning to give Mercy a 4-0 lead.
Ray, a freshman, tossed a complete-game four-hitter and struck out four to improve to 7-4 this season.

OWENSBORO, Ky. – Leigh Ellen Thomas tossed a one-hitter and went 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI to lead the Mercy Academy softball team to a 3-0 victory over Madisonville-North Hopkins on Friday in a consolation-bracket game of the Worth/KHSAA State Tournament.
Thomas, a senior left-hander who has signed with Tennessee Tech, struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter to improve to 18-10 this season. Whitney Bean’s one-out single in the second inning was the only baserunner she allowed.
No. 10-ranked Mercy (24-14) advanced to face Johnson Central (27-11) at 2 p.m. EDT in another consolation-bracket contest.
Thomas’ RBI single gave Mercy a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sam Dykes added a two-run single in the sixth to make it 3-0. Dykes finished 2 for 3.
No. 2 Madisonville-North Hopkins finished 35-7. The Lady Maroons entered the tournament with a team batting average of .400 and a state-record 63 home runs but managed a total of four hits and no runs in losses to Male and Mercy.
