Canadian prep hoops sensation Thon Maker’s rise to the top of the recruiting rankings has brought with it significant attention and widespread fascination about where Thon Maker and his brother, Matur Maker, will end up playing college basketball. While college hoops fans keep their eyes peeled for news from Oangeville, Ontario, where the brothers compete for the Athlete Institute Basketball Academy, they may also want to peek at a young developing talent in Southern California.
His name is Makur Maker, and he happens to be the younger cousin of the more famous Maker brothers. As noted by the Los Angeles Times, Makur Maker is an entering freshman at Chaminade College Prep in West Hills, Calif. He already stands 6-foot-11, and has been working on core post skills for more than a year. It’s important that the youngest Maker develops the most comfort possible inside. Like his cousins, Makur Maker is relatively new to basketball, but has taken to it quickly, as the video you see above from Sep. 2014 is testament to. Though just 14 — 13 at the time of that video — Makur Maker is already showing some of the natural athleticism of his cousins. That he has four years to develop, both physically and with his skills, before heading to the collegiate ranks makes him almost as intriguing as his more well-known cousins.
Still, for now Makur Maker is completely off the radar. Here’s the ultimate proof: His personal Hudl profile had a grand total of 0 views before we here at USA TODAY High School Sports tripped across it.
Only time will tell is Makur Maker spends his entire prep career at Chaminade. The elder Maker’s have both followed their legal guardian from Virginia to Canada as he moved to a higher profile prep coaching job. That may not be the case for Makur Maker, but he still may be heavily recruited by other top prep programs should he develop at pace. His last name alone will intrigue plenty of programs.
For now, he plays at Chaminade, which means that there will be plenty of eyes on the Eagles for the 2015-16 season.
