AUBURNDALE – At the beginning of the season, Devin Lemanski wrote down a set of goals for his senior year.
He’s still in pursuit of the big one, winning his second state championship, but the last couple of weeks he’s checked a few of his list.
Already in the books was winning his fourth Marawood Conference title. He accomplished another Saturday afternoon, winning a fourth WIAA Division 3 regional title.
Lemanski was one of three Edgar wrestlers who won regional titles and led the Wildcats to a second-place finish in the team standings. Stratford won the team title with 237 points and advanced to Tuesday’s team sectional.
Lemanski notched the 100th and 101st pins of his career, establishing himself as the program’s leader in that statistical category.
“It was actually a goal at the beginning of the season,” said Lemanski, who improved to 35-0. “I had 75 pins coming into the year, and I wanted to get 100.”
Pin No. 100 came in the semifinals when Lemanski dispatched Tannor Frahm of Athens in 1 minute, 24 seconds. He needed a little longer, 3:03, to pin Spencer’s Zach Schneider in the 170-pound finals.
“All my goals are just steps to becoming a two-time state champion,” Lemanski said.
Next week at Shawano, Lemanski is hoping to check off one more goal, becoming a four-time sectional champ.
Freshman Veliko Kochiu (120) and sophomore Alex Lemanski (152), Devin’s younger brother, also won individual titles for Edgar.
Athens advanced two wrestlers to next week’s sectional tournament, regional champ Nate Morse and runner-up Tucker Roesler.
Morse was winning his match against Stratford’s David Marquardt when he registered a pin in 3:10 to win the title at 138 pounds.
“It’s my first time winning regionals, so I’m very excited,” said the Athens sophomore. “I have a lot of confidence going into the sectional tournament, and I think I can do well. I’m wrestling well, and if I keep it up, I think I have a good shot at going to state.”
Roesler lost in the finals to Stratford’s Kam Bornbach, but got a wrestleback for second place. He made the most of the opportunity by pinning Spencer’s Travis Stelson to secure the runner-up position.
Marathon junior Jacob Mohr pinned Tyson Kauffman in 1:15 to win the 285 pound weight class and is the Raiders’ only sectional qualifier.
