A couple of updates from Thursday’s action at the Adidas Invitational:
>>>The Indiana Elite G3 Rising Stars lost a pool-play game in the 16-U bracket, but it wasn’t just to any team.
The St. Louis-based Ramey Jets United, a group of talented 2018 players, defeated G3 62-45.
Carte’Are Gordon, a man-child at 6-8 and 250 pounds, scored 15 points. He’s a physical player, but Gordon also showed the ability to handle the ball, going coast-to-coast and finishing on one sequence.
Gordon, who attends Vianney, already has offers from Kansas State, Illinois and Missouri. Purdue is showing interest and also has serious in Courtney Ramey, a 6-2 guard from Webster Groves in St. Louis. Ramey, the son of coach Terrell Ramey, has offers from Kansas State and Missouri, as well as Jacksonville State, Missouri State and Southeast Missouri State.
Torrence Watson, a 6-4 guard from Whitfield in St. Louis, is another standout for the Ramey Jets. Watson has offers from Kansas State, Missouri and Saint Louis.
Keep an eye on this St. Louis trio. Very impressive as 2018 prospects.
>>>Jalen Adaway of Logansport had 21 points and Cooper Neese added 17 as UA Indy Hoosiers rolled to a 79-52 win in pool play over M33M. Will have more on Adaway later. He’s hearing from a number of high-major and mid-major programs.
>>>Just a suspicion here, but I’d expect Grant Gelon’s phone to be buzzing quite a bit after the Adidas Invitational. The 6-5 Crown Point guard, a 2016 prospect, shot 11-for-23 from 3 over three games for Indiana Elite Central.
Gelon, who averaged 14.2 points as a junior at Crown Point and made a school-record 102 3-pointers (43 percent) for a team that advanced to the Class 4A regional final.
>>>Indiana Elite Central 2016 finished pool play 2-1 after a 65-53 win over UA Indy Hoosiers on Thursday afternoon. Gelon finished with 16 points (4-for-8 from 3), Muncie Central’s Andre Jones added 11 points and Hamilton Heights’ Hunter Crist added 10 points.
Some impressive numbers from Indiana Elite in the three games: the 6-5 Gelon is 11-for-23 from 3 and Crist was 8-for-13. Gelon averaged 13.0 points, Crist 11.7, Jones 10.7 and 4.3 rebounds and Tipton’s Mason Degenkolb 10.3.
>>>There’s currently an all-Indiana battle going on in the main gym between the Indiana Elite Central 2016s and the UA Indy Hoosiers. Ball State, IUPUI, South Alabama, Belmont, Illinois State, Eastern Kentucky and Tedledo are among the coaches here. IUPUI commit Reggie Tharp (Fort Wayne Concordia) among the players in this one.
>>>Indiana Elite Central 2017 defeated Ohio Basketball Club-Black 57-47 in a pool-play game Thursday afternoon. Isaac Hibbard, a New Albany guard, led Indiana Elite with 15 points and Carmel guard Sterling Brown added 12.
>>>Evansville Reitz guard Dru Smith (2016) told me Wednesday that Ball State coach James Whitford’s pitch to him is that he plans to accumulate as much in-state talent as possible. Whitford has been a presence here in Indy and is currently watching the Indiana Elite Central 2017 team with Southport’s 6-9 Dut Mabok, Warsaw’s Kyle Mangas, Carmel’s Ethan Merriweather and Sterling Brown, Mt. Vernon’s James McCloud and others. South Alabama, Akron, Western Michigan and others are also here.
>>>Tech guard Chris King (2016) scored 28 points as Indiana Elite Ice defeated Ohio Basketball Club 70-64 in a pool-play game. King was impressive, as was South Bend Washington guard Lorenzo Glass (12 points).
>>>There aren’t a a lot of high-major head coaches here today so far, but have seen quite a few mid-major assistants. The Adidas Gauntlet in Atlanta going on at the same time has scraped off some of the high-major national talent that we’ve seen here here in previous years, though I’d expect to see more come through as the tournament progresses.
>>>Eron Gordon’s team, the Eric Gordon Central Stars, rebounded with a win this morning over the Minnesota Heat. The EG team will play again at 6 p.m. in the North Central main gym.
