MURFREESBORO — Kristin Demonbreun sat on the sidelines the past three years — watching, waiting and cheering on Siegel’s volleyball team.
The entire time the Siegel High senior dreamed of her opportunity to help lead her school add to its volleyball legacy and reach another TSSAA Class AAA state tournament.
Now, she’ll get that opportunity.
The Lady Stars (34-8) will be host to Walker Valley at 7 p.m. Thursday in a Class AAA sectional. All sectional winners advance to next week’s state tournament held in Rutherford County at Blackman High, MTSU, Siegel High and Stewarts Creek High.
“I knew from my freshman year that I probably wasn’t going to play until now,” said Demonbreun, a 5-foot-4 setter. “It’s a really great feeling to be doing so well this season and playing so well.
“I get nervous and excited about it because this is my first time. But I’m really looking forward to this opportunity”
Demonbreun was an unknown prior to the high school season. She learned from three-year starter Jill Morgan previously, watching how the all-state setter ran the Lady Stars offense. But Siegel hasn’t skipped a beat with Demonbreun in at setter.
“I knew she was a great player and had a great attitude,” Siegel coach Shawn Robinson said. “She was able to learn and watch.
“I told her my first year (in 2014) that you need to learn and watch. She’s played like a two-year or three-year starter.”
Demonbreun was named the District 7-AAA regular season and tournament MVP this season. She was also on the all-Region 4-AAA team. Demonbreun has 1,039 assists and 96 aces — both team highs. She also has 175 digs.
Her jump serve has given opposing teams fits all season. It’s a floater that forces the back row to pay close attention to it.
“I think it’s just the contact point,” Robinson said. “She’s shorter, so it’s kind of hard to judge where she’s at. The first thing you learn as a serve receiver is where is the contact being made. And it’s a float serve. Float serves are tough.
Demonbreun said she’s also learned to attack opponents more with her serve.
“I’ve really been working on going to the corners,” Demonbreun said. “If you serve to anybody but the libero, they are going to be out of system nine times out of 10.”
Demonbreun is one of five seniors on the Lady Stars trying to reach their third straight state tournament. Siegel has finished third the past two seasons.
“This is a really good feeling that if we do win this game at home on Thursday that I myself will be playing in the state tournament,” she said. “That’s never happened. I’ve been sitting on the bench in the atmosphere.
“I’ve honestly been waiting for this.”
