ROCKLEDGE — It was all Dontavious Marcus on Friday night in Titusville’s game at Rockledge.
Marcus scored four touchdowns in three different ways as the Terriers defeated the Raiders 38-21.
The loss, along with Merritt Island’s win over Palm Bay, eliminated Rockledge from playoff contention.
“Dontavious means everything, to be quite honest with you. He is a multi-talented, multi-faceted offensive weapon,” said Titusville head coach Wayne Lawrence. “There’s not many things he can’t do well. Catching the ball well like a receiver, he runs the ball like a running back and any kind of space that he can get, he uses and accelerates and good things come out of that.”
Titusville kicked off the scoring when quarterback Yusuf Dereese found Tommy Mack on third-and-long for a 22-yard score. Rockledge responded as Jalen Mitchell capped off a drive that saw him run for 83 yards total with a 13-yard scoring run to even things up.
Dereese found Marcus for an 80-yard touchdown pass to help the Terriers retake the lead.
“Coach said follow my blocks. Every time I touched the ball, I ran hard,” Marcus said.
A little less than two minutes later, Marcus recovered a punt that was blocked by teammate Kendrick Wright and returned it 20 yards for a TD to put the Terriers up two scores at 21-7.
The Raiders responded before the end of the half with Jaquez Lyons finding Jesson Walker on a 10-yard pitch-and-catch to help cut the Titusville lead to 21-14 going into the half.
But Marcus would make his presence felt again early in the third, scoring on a 55-yard run to put the Terriers back up two touchdowns.
Rockledge proved stubborn again, with Lyons finishing a methodical drive that included a fourth-down conversion with a 16-yard plunge to draw Rockledge again to within a touchdown of tying it.
But a long kickoff return by — who else — Marcus, to Rockledge’s 38-yard line helped set up a 27-yard field goal to put the Terriers up by a more comfortable two-score margin again at 31-21.
Two other special teams plays helped Titusville finish things off. First, a bad snap on a field goal attempt denied Rockledge a score on an early fourth quarter drive and a personal foul by the Raiders on a Titusville field goal attempt led to Marcus scoring his fourth touchdown of the night on a five-yard run to salt the game away.
