Tonight at 8:30: LIVE chat on Section 1 tournament quarterfinals

By

A few things to touch on today:

• Join me right here tonight at 8:30 for a LIVE chat. We will discuss the upcoming Class AA, A and B quarterfinals, which are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

You can log in here at 8:30 and ask me questions or send me comments. It’s your opportunity to steer the discussion.

• There has been one scheduling change for this week. Much to my chagrin, Harrison-Tappan Zee will now be played at 6:15 p.m. — not 4:30 and certainly not 1, as was oh-so-briefly planned. That means you and me and everyone else can only attend one of Tuesday’s four quarterfinals, which are all scheduled for between 5:30 and 7 (and the 5:30 game, Spring Valley-Yorktown) is in Rockland.

Boo.

• Check back around 6 p.m. for my predictions on all of this week’s quarterfinals.

• On Friday night, I had a unique doubleheader. I covered Iona Prep’s 70-58 win at Stepinac and then Iona College’s 70-67, last-second victory over Manhattan.

Iona Prep shook off a slow start and, it hopes, eased some of last week’s tensions with a much-needed victory.

Stepinac led the game 15-5, but the momentum shifted — and mostly for the remainder of the game — when Jordan Tucker went to the bench with two fouls midway through the first period.

Down at Manhattan, Iona star A.J. English (pictured right), a budding NBA prospect, broke open a tie by drilled a deep 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds remaining. English’s 22-point effort came in front of 16 NBA scouts, some of who were in town for the All-Star Game.

If you haven’t seen him, I’d make it a point to get to Iona to watch English play. He’s a high-major talent who could play anywhere in the country. Iona is not bad either — 20-6, 13-2 in the MAAC.
