Texas didn’t just suffer a shellacking in South Bend over the holiday weekend. The Longhorns also lost off the field when one of their defensive backfield targets for the Class of 2017 eschewed the ‘Horns and other in-state schools to commit to Oklahoma.

To be fair, Texas was hardly the only school bypassed by Southlake Carroll safety Robert Barnes; he also passed on scholarship offers from Baylor and Alabama, each of which were recruiting the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder extensively.

Barnes announced his decision on Twitter on Labor Day, giving Oklahoma fans a good reason to offer up a big old Boomer Sooner at their neighborhood barbecue.

For Longhorn fans? It’s just another loss in the recruiting and Big XII stakes. Given the magnitude of the Notre Dame setback, losing the likes of Barnes shouldn’t even feel particularly painful. My, how times have changed.
