Top SC receiver Bryan Edwards decommits from Gamecocks, decides to visit Clemson within days

How’s this for an about face: Not only is Bryan Edwards, a longtime South Carolina commit, no longer committed to the Gamecocks. He’s taking an official visit to archrival Clemson just two days later.

Ryan Bartow of 247 Sports was first to report Edwards was decommitting from South Carolina and would visit Clemson for the Tigers’ game against Wake Forest.

Edwards is a 6-foot-3 recruit from Conway S.C., just outside Myrtle Beach. It’s closer to Columbia and the home of the University of South Carolina than Clemson, though it’s not particularly close to either. After one season of the bona fide recruiting whirlwind, Edwards committed to South Carolina and coach Steve Spurrier in late March. He decommitted on Wednesday, Nov. 19, nearly eight months later.

Of course, a lot has changed in the eight months since Edwards announced his intention to spend the next four years in Columbia. The Gamecocks have endured a woeful season, so woeful that Spurrier himself departed smack dab in the middle of it (South Carolina is 3-7 entering Saturday’s game against The Citadel). Meanwhile, Clemson has roared to the top of the College Football Playoff rankings, with Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney steering the Tigers toward another top recruiting class while simultaneously closing in on a semifinal berth.

Are those the reasons for Edwards’ decommitment and renewed consideration of Clemson? Will he actually leave South Carolina at the altar when push comes to shove?

As of now, no one knows, save perhaps Edwards himself. If nothing else, the Conway star has certainly added another layer of intrigue to the annual Palmetto State rivalry game which will close out the regular season.
