The big man on the team — and one of the few seniors — had a big throw for Richmond Tuesday night in a dual track meet against rival Muncie Central at Lyboult Field.
Senior Nathon Trawick heaved the shot nearly 60 feet, and over 15 feet longer than anybody else, and his teammates strung together strong performances in edging the Bearcats 69-59 in the lone home track and field meet of the season for the Red Devils.
So even though Muncie Central dominated on the girls side, the hosts had a building meet for all of the major May track competitions to come, starting with Saturday’s Kokomo Relays.
“We kind of used this meet to experiment with a lot of kids in different spots. We have not had a lot of dual meets, which provide an opportunity to do that,” said RHS head track coach Ken Hittson, in his 11th season. “We have a lot of young girls, a lot of young boys too, and it just takes time to see what they can all do, and where the best place in our lineup might be for them.”
One sure senior returning is all-state athlete Trawick, who was dominant in Tuesday’s dual with a shot put of 59 feet, 8 inches.
“Nate had a big night, and I think he’s got a shot not only to go back to state, but to win it,” Hittson said of his senior. “He’s got the second-best throw in the state this season with this throw tonight, and Nate has a strong chance to compete at state. He is a strong athlete, a strong student, and a leader for our program.”
The soft-spoken Trawick was pleased after the meet.
“I felt like I had a really good night. All of my throws were pretty good, and to break out the 59-8 was really nice. It was a great little throw,” Trawick said.
He has a big goal during his remaining weeks of competing for Richmond in track and field.
“I want to go over 60 feet, and hopefully break the school record, which I think is over 63 feet,” the senior said.
In fact, officials at the meet related that Doug Epps has the RHS school record with a throw of 63-1.
“I think if I get in that range of 63 feet, at the right time, I can go for state. I want to compete for the blue ribbon (first place),” he added. “It’s an exciting time.”
Other Red Devils boys with major contributions to Tuesday’s team win were Carson Cloter with wins in the 110 hurdles and the long jump, and Juwaun Claiborne took the 100 and 200 meters. Claiborne was joined by Dre Davis, Cory Powell and Noah Shaw in wining the 400 meter relay.
Key in clinching the team win late in the meet was the 3,200 meter duo of Julian Reeves and Logan Tilton, who finished first and second respectively, in the boys race to hold off a Central comeback.
On the girls side, Central’s domination in track events led to a win by a lopsided margin of 100-27.
The young RHS girls, with just three seniors among 40 athletes on the team’s formal roster, won twice on the night, with Elizabeth Bailey winning the pole vault, and the foursome of Calin Klingman, Merab Murphy, Riley Austin, and Jada Hunter won the 1,600 meter relay.
Austin, just a freshman, also was second in the long jump and third in the high jump.
“It’s been a great experience to run on the high school team. I have been able to run on the 400 meter relay team, and then tonight on the 1,600 meter relay,” Austin said while still out of breath from her part in a winning effort. “Tonight, I just gave it my all, and kept going, even though I had not trained for it, or run that race before. I just want to keep practicing and do better.”
Richmond will compete with Muncie Central again on May 8 at the North Central Conference (NCC) meet at Marion.
