The Tri County Crush 8-and-under softball team captured the Southwest Regional Softball Tournament championship over the weekend in Magnolia, which had 13 teams from Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma competing.
The Crush won their first bracket game Wednesday, defeating Pampa, Texas, the West Texas state champs, 10-0 in four innings. The team then edged Westside, La., 7-5.
The Crush avenged a state tournament loss with a 15-11 win over the Harrison Sweet Heat on Thursday, playing the Sweet Heat for the seventh time this season.
Tri County defeated the Louisiana state champs, Pierre Part, La., 9-6 in the winner’s bracket final on Friday. Pierre Part battled its way back through the loser’s bracket to face Tri County in the championship.
The Crush took a commanding 13-4 lead going into the fifth inning. The Louisiana team scored four in the bottom of the fifth, but the Crush held them scoreless the rest of the way to claim the title.
The Crush are the only Tri County team to ever win a regional and move on to the World Series, which will be held in Gainesville Fla.
Team members are Izard County’s Katie Orf, Quinn Johnson, Megan McBride and Paige Beaver, Melbourne’s Katy Miller, Salem’s Allison Smith and Olivia Smith, and Mammoth Spring’s Haydyn Friend, Laney Young and Brynn Washam, who was named the tournament’s MVP.
