Division II softball state championship
Who: No. 2 Tucson Salpointe Catholic vs. No. 4 Vail Cienega.
When: 5 p.m. Monday.
Where: Farrington Stadium, Tempe.
Key players: Annie Scarangella, Sr., IF, Salpointe Catholic; Delfina Morales, Sr., P/OF, Salpointe Catholic; Shelby Kennedy, Sr., OF, Cienega; Kayla Green, Sr., P, Cienega.
Road to the final: Salpointe Catholic (29-7) got here under first-year coach Amy Baray-Rocha, who was a member of two Salpointe state championship teams in 1993 and 1996. Cienega (25-8) enters on a nine-game winning streak, scoring in double digits in all but one of those contests. The teams should be familiar with each other, having just faced off Thursday with Cienega taking a 3-1 victory. That propelled Cienega into the championship and briefly dropped Salpointe Catholic to the losers’ bracket, where it was two outs from elimination before scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Peoria Sunrise Mountain 5-4 and set up the rematch with Cienega, which also defeated Salpointe 3-2 on March 30.
Quotable: “I am looking forward to making lifetime memories with this team. Each player has prepared well all year and they are ready to compete on the final day of the season. It should be another good game against a tough opponent in Salpointe.” – Cienega coach Eric Tatham
