The following is the Turpin football preview for the Forest Hills Journal.
NEWTOWN – Last year, the Spartans picked up Rob Stoll’s 100th win as head coach and pushed his career record to 101-45.
But in the last two years, Turpin is a combined 8-12 and is three years removed from the perfect regular season it put together. Of course, that’s all in the past and coaches like to focus on the here and now.
“With 16 returning starters, we have the potential to play with the league’s best,” he said. “The key will be staying healthy throughout the season.”
Bennie Stoll, now a senior, returns to run the offense. He was one of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference’s passing leaders with more than 1,000 yards. Unfortunately for the Spartans, like the other top passers in the conference, Stoll was prone to throwing interceptions.
Maintaining possession has to be a top priority for him this year.
Fortunately for Bennie Stoll, running back A’drien Baker returns to the backfield with him. Baker does a little bit of everything for Turpin.
Last season, he racked up 972 all-purpose yards in eight games. With his average yards per game, he would have easily eclipsed 1,000 yards had he played a full season.
Rob Stoll’s defense returns key players at every level. On the defensive line, it’s Ben Rackley. Among the linebackers, it’s Lang Evans. And in the secondary, there’s Dylan Padgett.
Evans was first-team all-conference last season.
Games to watch include McNicholas as the season opener and the matchup with Anderson lurking in Week 7.
