Dryden senior Taylor Bennett earned Player of the Year honors in Class B and was among 20 area girls selected to the recently-released all-state girls soccer teams.
The all-state teams are picked by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Association for Girls Sports, and the New York State Sportswriters Association.
Bennett, a Syracuse University recruit, scored 186 goals for the Lions, second all-time in Section 4 history. She’s been a first-team all-state pick the past two seasons. As a freshman, Bennett earned fourth-team all-state accolades.
Others earning first-team honors from Section 4 were Vestal senior midfielder Madeline Beaulieu in Class A; Elmira Notre Dame seniors Emma Booth and Victoria Schutrum, and Lansing junior Madeline Boerman in Class C; and Milford seniors Hannah Saggese and Addy Lawson in Class D.
Second-team recognition went to Corning senior Hailey Bicknell in Class AA, Vestal senior Payton Gennett in Class A, Seton Catholic Central junior Genna Michitti in Class B, Elmira ND freshman Laurel Vargas and Lansing sophomore Kassie Riemer in Class C.
Beaulieu suffered a knee injury during Vestal’s 2-2 tie with Goshen in a state quarterfinal. She missed the final 20 or so minutes of regulation, along with the overtimes. Vestal’s 17-0-1 season ended in penalty-kick shootout loss that day. Beaulieu, a third-team all-state pick last season, scored before her injury. Gennett anchored a Golden Bears defense that hadn’t allowed a goal in 2015 before facing Goshen.
Booth, Schutrum and Vargas led the Crusaders to an appearance in the Class C state final, along with junior goalie Mackenzie Maloney, who was selected to the Third Team. END lost, 3-1, to Port Jefferson in the state final to complete an 18-2 season. Booth was named to the all-state team for the third time. She was a third-team pick last year and a fourth-team selection in 2013. Schutrum earned second-team accolades last season, as did Vargas.
Boerman and Riemer helped Lansing to a 13-5-1 season that ended with a 4-1 loss to END in the Section 4 Class C final. Boerman is making her second straight appearance on the First Team. Michelle Schafer was selected to the Third Team for the Bobcats.
Corning’s Bicknell made it back-to-back all-state selections. She earned third-team honors in 2014. Elmira sophomore Kendra Oldroyd (Sixth Team) and Horseheads senior Mia Strollo (Seventh Team) were the area’s other selections in Class AA.
Michitti appears as a second-team pick for the second straight season. She helped the Saints reach the Section 4 Class B final, as did junior defender Emily Purtell — picked to the Fourth Team in Class B.
The team that beat the Saints in the sectional final, Chenango Forks, placed junior midfielder Kaitlyn Walsh on the Third Team. Walsh helped a young Blue Devils squad advance to the state semifinals, where they lost, 1-0, to eventual state champion Schalmont.
The other area girl to earn honors in Class B was Windsor senior midfielder Danielle Cary, a fifth-team selection.
Others honored from the area in Class C were Odessa-Montour junior Sage Garrison (Fourth Team), Marathon senior Ashley Bush (Fifth Team) and Sidney senior Jolene Krom (Fifth Team).
