Newman, a McDonald’s All American and arguably the nation’s best perimeter scorer, is considering UK, Mississippi State, LSU, Ole Miss, NC State and Kansas. The Wildcats, long thought to be the leaders for Newman, are now seen as anything but a lock to get him, and Mississippi State, under new coach Ben Howland, has been generated the most recent buzz.

Newman’s father, Horatio Webster, played at Mississippi State.

LSU also has been considered a legitimate contender, too.

The Clarion-Ledger, a sister paper of The Courier-Journal, will play host to Newman’s announcement, which you can watch at courier-journal.com

Malik Newman ‘feels like it’s time to decide’

Perhaps on the chance it won’t get Newman, UK has begun recruiting Vincennes junior-college wing scorer Mychal Mulder more heavily and has reportedly offered him a scholarship. Mulder is expected to visit Lexington this weekend.

UK is also still recruiting small forwards Brandon Ingram, who will announce his college commitment next Monday, and Jaylen Brown. Coach John Calipari met Monday night with five-star power forward Cheick Diallo.

UK is also among the top options for five-star power forward Thon Maker, who is reclassifying from 2016 to ’15. In a significant development, Maker’s guardian told Scout.com that Maker is not currently considering skipping college and playing professionally abroad next season.

Maker’s guardian also told Scout that the academic work required in Maker’s reclassification efforts could extend into next year, and he may not join a college team until midyear. UK, Kansas, Indiana and Arizona State are recruiting Maker hard. Arizona State has hired new assistant Brian Merritt, who has a close relationship with Maker from having worked with him at John Lucas’ camps and training facility.
