WASHINGTON CH – The Zane Trace girls track team used the momentum of winning the Scioto Valley Conference to jump out to a lead on the first day of the Division II district track meet Tuesday.
The Pioneers used a 1-2 finish in the high jump and a second place finish in the 3200 relay to pile up 27 points to top the 10-team field with the final day of competition coming up on Saturday. For the boys, Unioto is in second place with 22 points, trailing first place Circleville, who had 34 points.
Unioto’s Trevor Detillion, meanwhile, continued to assail local discus record books, winning the district title with a throw of 193-06, beating the record he set a year ago by 15 feet. Waverly’s Aaron Elliott, a junior, finished second at 149-02 and, in a surprise development, Zane Trace’s Walt Petzel fouled on all three throws and did not advance. Petzel had qualified for state competition in both 2013 and 2014.
For the girls, Freshman Hailey Puckett topped the high jump field at 5-0, while her junior teammate Morgan Miller matched her effort, but Puckett won the district title based on fewer overall misses.
Meanwhile, the SVC went 1-2 in the boys and girls 3200 relay with Unioto’s team of Alex Evans, Haley Wright, Elena Knipp and Kela Harkins finishing in 10:05.48 to win the district crown. Zane Trace’s Alison Chinn, Ivy Beam, Hailey Puckett and Kim Wolfe finished in second at 10:12.24. Waverly’s Leta Heigley, Hannah Goodman, Rachel McCambridge and Jamie Welch finished fifth.
The Shermans’ Cole Clever, Jesse Greisheimer, Jeremy Good and David Magda raced to the win in 8:30.27 on the boys side, ahead of Zane Trace’s Mark Scott, Darby Pillow, Kelly Rogers and Pierce Mowery at 8:34.39. Waverly’s Brendan Davis, Alec Parker, Brenden Reed and Hunter Hoove finished fifth. Westfall finished eight.
