UT signing Jefferson "compares" Tebow Florida impact

By

Texas coach Charlie Strong can only hope his early comparison to Mesquite Poteet linebacker Malik Jefferson being like a Tim Tebow-like momentum shift with Florida’s 2006 recruiting class which would lead to the Gators’ two national championships with fellow stars Percy Harvin, Brandon Spikes and Riley Cooper.

Jefferson committed to Texas on Dec. 19, his last day of school at Poteet and already is enrolled at Texas. But Jefferson’s personality is as dynamic as his athletic ability and he helped sway a bevy of recruits to sign with Texas on Wednesday. Texas, as usual, is ranked among the nation’s top recruiting classes. Strong will have to see if he can get higher production out of his blue-chips than Mack Brown did in his legacy as Coach February which resulted in a 2006 national title for Texas but a steady decline in recent years.

Strong was optimistic about his signing class which included a midnight call from Aledo receiver Ryan Newsome, who committed to UCLA just a week ago. It was clear in a video made by Newsome’s family how much it wanted Newsome to attend Texas. At his UCLA announcement, Newsome was obviously conflicted and eventually Newsome switched back to Texas after having made a call to Strong at 2:30 a.m. last week saying he was going to Texas before telling UCLA coach Jim Mora at 4 a.m. he was going to UCLA.

The value of NSD2015 is that Newsome is signed at Texas and his most immediate impact will be returning punts and kicks. He is Tim Brown-like there even at 5-9, 165. Newsome, by the way, was second at the state meet in the 100 meters last year to Baylor sensational freshman receiver K.D. Cannon … If you aren’t of a certain age, Brown was a Heisman Trophy winner at Notre Dame from Woodrow Wilson just voted into the NFL Hall of Fame this past weekend. But Brown was a better size 6-0, 195 …

The Texas vs. UCLA Showdown

UCLA got Plano West running back Soso Jamabo with his decision Wednesday .. UCLA coach Jim Mora was at his playoff game vs. Keller at AT&T Stadium … Aledo’s Newsome switched back to Texas after committing to UCLA and Skyline receiver Carlos Strickland signed with Cal (former Texas Tech assistant Sonny Dykes as head coach) after having Texas and UCLA in his finalists.

Look for A&M commitment Thursday?

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin told ESPN-Dallas radio to expect a Class of 2016 “YesSir” maybe very early Thursday .. Sumlin tweets out that #Hashtag to alert TexAgs that a new commitment has been made .. Sumlin also handled well the flirting of Allen quarterback Kyler Murray with Texas and Oklahoma in the last few months after committing last spring to A&M.

“Couple-three teams had a depth-chart which looked better than ours,” Sumlin said. “And (Murray) would be their guy.” A&M returns Kyle Allen at quarterback while Texas and Oklahoma are looking for new quarterbacks. Sumlin said quarterback is always an “open battle” like other positions so as not to rule out Murray’s chances of playing early. The Aggies have serious problems to overcome June 8 when Murray is expected to be a top baseball draft pick and his uncle, Calvin Murray, work with baseball super agent Scott Boras … Kyler Murray is the first high school player to have been selected to play in Under Armour’s football and baseball all-star games. Murray got a hit in the baseball game played at Chicago’s Wrigley Field while taking a quick flight after a August football practice on a Saturday morning …

Why is West Coast recruiting North Texas so well?

Why is UCLA so strong in North Texas? Key assistants Noel Mazzone once was critical TCU assistant with strong relationships in Texas and Adrian Klemm was hired as recruiter extraordinaire from SMU … USC always has increased its Texas presence as well with running backs Aca’cedric Ware of Cedar Hill and McKinney North running back Ronald Jones and the Trojans have targeted North Texas as well with highly visible assistants including Richardson grad and former Oklahoma Sooner Chris Wilson and Clay Helton, the son of former Houston coach Kim Helton. Clay Helton played at Fort Bend Clements.

And for Washington: Huskies coach Chris Peterson was on sidelines as much as any Big 12 coach while he was head coach at Boise State up until a year ago … The SEC thought it would gain huge entrée to the state of Texas with adding A&M but that strategy hasn’t taken root as the Aggies have made a convincing argument to just play at College Station rather than hit the SEC road.

Texas QB prospects reality check

Texas coach Charlie Strong was trying to sell Kai Locksley (son of former New Mexico State coach Mike Locksley) as a quarterback but the 6-3, 185-pound Locksley who ran mostly at quarterback in high school and played receiver in high profile all-star games … Cistercian quarterback Matthew Merrick is a gray-shirt commit for 2016 but the 6-3 Merrick is a fast-improving rollout-quarterback prospect who has worked with QB guru Kevin Murray (Kyler’s dad) after concentrating on youth basketball until the last two years .. Merrick is a terrific athletic who competed in national AAU hoops with the Texas Titans with a roster of Soso Jamabo, Tyler Davis, D.J. Hogg and Mickey Mitchell …

Update

Harvard Men: Parish Episcopal quarterback Tom Stewart and Denton Guyer receiver Adam Scott will be future Crimson teammates along with St. Mark’s tight end Case Brabham 9son of former SMU/NFLer Carey Brabham of Hughes Spring) and Keller Fossil Ridge defensive back Charlie Walker … Former Lake Highlands quarterback Ricky Zorn just finished his Harvard career and his attending NFL combines as a defensive back …

There will be good DFW representation for Harvard-Yale. Yale signed Highland Park lineman Rees Lemay after former Parish Episcopal defensive back Charles Cook graduates with some NFL combine tryouts with three years as a starter … The All-Brainiac MVP: Frisco Liberty QB/ATH Udgam Goyal headed to MIT… Top Bloodline: Highland Park LB Michael Linehan going to Idaho where his dad (Dallas Cowboys play-called Scott Linehan) and uncles played.

Another Jay Ajayi? Boise State signed an unheralded running back out of Frisco Liberty in 2011 and Ajayi turned into one of the best back in the country last season and already opted to enter the NFL draft … Boise State signed similar profiles with Arlington running back Raymond Sheard (6-1, 185) who had 1,505 yards with 17 touchdowns rushing for the Colts …

  • The Most Impact for TCU; Arlington Bowie defensive back Niko Small will be the next where’d he come? Star for the Frogs … Excellent in coverage and ridiculous knack for big plays … Tyrann Mathieu-like
  • Most Impact for SMU: Xavier Castille of Rockwall. Kid’s a kick returner, pass rusher, receiver, running back. He’s not wow at one position but NFL-like versatility for special teams and the right plays, which I believe Chad Morris knows how to run
  • Most Impact for Texas Tech: Donta Thompson of Ennis. A 6-4 receiver who was key to state title run. Needs a little weight/strength but he wins the Dez Bryant-like jump balls
  • Most Impact for Baylor: QB Jarrett Stidham. No matter how optimistic you are, raise the expectations.
