Vega keeps unbeaten streak, Mesa Mountain View wins second straight Division I team title

PRESCOTT VALLEY – Danny Vega doesn’t know how many matches he’s wrestled since the last time he lost.

He just knows it’s a lot.

Vega kept that streak going Saturday, winning the 113-pound title at the Division I wrestling championships at the Prescott Valley Event Center.

The Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge junior struggled with Tucson senior Joseph Delorme for two periods, gaining only a 4-3 lead, but then struck for the pin 24 seconds into the third to give him his second consecutive title and add another victory to the streak – even if he couldn’t quite peg where it’s at.

“I believe it’s in the 70s,” Vega said. “I can’t tell you exactly. I just wrestle.”

Ironwood Ridge coach Tim Berrier later confirmed the streak to be at 77 matches, dating back to Vega’s freshman year.

While Vega was all smiles after his win, it was a bittersweet victory for Mesa Mountain View, which won its second straight team title in Division I after finishing with 193 points to runner-up Tucson Sunnyside’s 158.

Despite collecting 10 state placers in 14 weight classes Saturday, Mountain View crowned just one champion – senior Kieffer Taylor at 170 pounds.

Mountain View suffered a pair of heartbreaks in the matches preceding Taylor’s, as twin brother Weston and fellow senior Blake Monty fell at 160 and 152 pounds, respectively.

“Lot of mixed emotions,” coach Bob Callison said. “We had some seniors that lost tonight, and my heart goes out to those guys because they worked so hard and wrestled a good, hard schedule this year. My heart hurts for those guys.

“But at the same time, we had 10 guys place in the tournament and we were only four points off of last year’s team score. So I’m real happy for us as a whole.”

Other champions Saturday included: Ryan Farina, sophomore, Tempe Corona del Sol (126); Taylor Rich, senior, Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor (138); Josh Jaramillo, senior, Mesa Dobson (145); James Williams, junior, Mesa (152); Austin Moyer, senior, Mesa Westwood (160); Johnathan Allen, senior, Mesa (182); Jeremiah Imonode, senior, Desert Vista (195); Travis Howard, senior, Marana (220); Roy Lopez, junior, Gilbert Mesquite (285).
