After winning back-to-back state championships, Venice left last year’s 2014 Class 6A state semifinal heartbroken after a 3-0 loss to Winter Haven.

But this year, the Indians made sure that they would advance to their third state championship game in four years. They defeated Miami Mater Academy 3-2 in 11 innings Friday night in a semifinal game at JetBlue Park.

Mitch Donofrio scored the go-ahead run for the Indians (28-3) with two outs in the top of the 11th on a wild pitch. Deyvid Silva and Daniel Reyes drove in game-tying runs in the bottom of the fifth and eighth innings, respectively, for the Lions (18-10) who were the defending Class 6A state champions.

Venice will play Bartram Trail today for the Class 6A title at 7:35 p.m.
