ENDWELL – Vestal seniors Tomasina Leska and Julia Lovaglia aren’t ready for their scholastic girls lacrosse careers to end just yet.
Leska had five goals and four assists, and Lovaglia added four goals and an assist as the Golden Bears captured their fourth straight Section 4 Class B title with a 15-4 victory over Horseheads on Thursday at Maine-Endwell.
Vestal (15-1) will meet the Section 3 champion in a state Class B first-round contest next Thursday at M-E.
After victories by scores of 18-9 and 18-5 over Horseheads (9-6) during the regular season, Vestal entered the title game as a significant favorite. Not surprisingly, the Golden Bears seized control in the first half.
After the Blue Raiders’ Crystal Powers scored with 21:03 left in the first half to tie the score at 1, Vestal scored four straight goals.
Chloe Kurst opened the surge when she scored less than a minute after Powers’ goal to put Vestal ahead for good, 2-1, and Leska capped it when she scored her first goal with 15:52 remaining in the half to make it 5-1.
Leska scored the final two goals of the first half to give Vestal a 7-2 lead.
“We usually start off slow, but once we get in a groove we get it going,” Lovaglia said.
Scoring was absent for much of the first part of the second half, but then Vestal removed any semblance of doubt about the outcome with a four-goal spurt. That was capped by Jamie Peters’ goal with 6:34 left that pushed Vestal’s lead to 12-3.
“We usually finish better than we did earlier in the game,” Williams said. “But we did what needed to do and turned it on when we had to.”
When asked about the play of Leska and Lovaglia, Williams cracked a wide smile.
“They’re as good as it gets, those two,” Williams said. “We only have three seniors on this team, but they way they have led and embraced the younger girls, that’s why they play so well together and why they’re a cohesive team.”
Powers led Horseheads with two goals.
