Everything about umpires is meant to be identicate. from the uniforms to the strike zones. One of the only way they get to express any personality is via their strike call, particularly on a full strikeout.
Gambrell, a high school umpire in California, was recently working a game at Buchanan High School in Clovis, Calif. behind the plate. On one particular swinging strikeout, Gambrill went directly from calling the out to an excellent version of The Whip Dance.
Two things here:
1) That’s a pretty impressive Whip Dance, as we’re sure King Imprint would agree.
2) Pulling out the Whip Dance during a high school summer league or (more likely) American Legion game? That’s a gutsy move.
Maybe that’s the only time Gambrell has gone pop culture on a strikeout. We certainly hope it isn’t. Prep baseball needs more characters like Gambrell.
