Central Decatur of Leon, Ia. edged Des Moines Christian 22-19 on Friday. While Central Decatur’s offense had some effective moments, it still wouldn’t have won without one of the most jaw-dropping plays of the season … on defense.
The player you see pulling in the athletic one-handed interception and return for a touchdown above is Peyton Peterson, a senior superstar in the making. Peterson read a passing route for Des Moines Christian and jumped the route, elevating to intercept a pass with a long, Odell Beckham-like outstretched paw and then taking it back to the house for a critical Central Decatur touchdown. The 33-yard sprint to the end zone was impressive, too, simply because Peterson pulled away from all the chasing DMC receivers haring after him.
There’s no guessing where Pedersen will go from here. At 6-foot-5 and 185 points, the athletic, rangy star has started on both sides of the ball, as a wide receiver and defensive back. He’s also an outstanding basketball player, as one might guess given his size and athleticism.
What we do know is that Peterson will have one heck of a time trying to top his best highlight to date.
