With a name like Clancy Cockerham, you better be good at football.
If this catch is any indication of Cockherham’s performance for Gooding (Idaho), he isn’t just good. He’s unreal. The senior made this spectacular one-handed touchdown grab in Idaho’s Class 3A state championship game. Unfortunately, it only trimmed the deficit to 21 in an eventual 54-22 loss.
“I knew I was going to try as hard as I could to bring it down,” Cockerham told MagicValley.com. “He kind of had my arm pinned, so I kind of just went up with one hand and pulled it down. … I’ll always remember it.”
Cockerham earned all-state honors as a defensive back last season, but I think he found his calling as a wide receiver. He finished with a pair of touchdown grabs in the title game — the first of which tied the score 7-7 early in the second quarter. Maybe Gooding should’ve tossed a few more lobs his way.
Let’s take a look at that second touchdown catch again. And again. And again.
This play is best watched while singing along to Sammy Davis Jr.’s “The Candy Man,” only with a twist: Who can catch a football with one hand? Cockerham can, oh Clancy Cockerham can.
