It may not have been regulation, but 11-year-old Ashlyn Watkins still flushed home the dunk heard round the world.
Watkins, a fifth grade girl in South Carolina, sent home a slam dunk on an open break during a league all-star game, drawing a gaggle of oohs and aahs. Bob’s Blitz reported that the slam came during an all-star contest while MaxPreps reported that the SC76ers star’s slam came on a nine-foot hoop in an Eastern Columbia Youth Basketball League game.
That shortened basket isn’t dimming hope about Watkins’ future. The 5-foot-11 post player — who is a member of the Class of 2022, for those keeping score at home — is reportedly already grabbing rims on 10-foot hoops. That’s enough to get people talking about Watkins being the youngest woman to slam a ball on a regulation hoop in a competitive game.
It might be a bit premature for that, but there’s no question that Watkins has built up a deserved buzz with her dunk, which was cleaner than most 11-year-olds shoot layups on a basket of any height.
