It must be something about state semifinals that bring out the best in prep sports trickery.
As noted by the Rockford Register Star, Peru St. Bede used a trick play that was almost identical to one used by Colorado squad Rye in its own state semifinal. The video you see above instead comes from a game between St. Bede and Rockford Christian. With the two teams knotted 1-1, St. Bede pitcher Jarrett Olson swiveled and faked a furious pickoff attempt to second base. The Rockford runner bought it, and while looking for the ball in the outfield, was tagged out by Olson before he could scamper away to third base.
It was an epic out, and one which foiled a Rockford offensive spurt before it could get off the ground. That in turn kept the game deadlocked into extra innings, before Rockford Christian finally scraped out a game-winning run in the ninth inning.
That run ended St. Bede’s season, though it hardly diminished how remarkable St. Bede’s clutch play had been, particularly with Olson grinding through a complete nine inning performance.
