Note to aspiring collegiate hoops stars: Want to earn a scholarship offer from your local school? Go dunk on the team’s current center.
That was the strategy employed by soon-to-be Florida sophomore Nassir Little, a small forward at Oakleaf High in Jacksonville. During the recent University of Central Florida Elite Camp, Little watched current UCF center Staphon Blair overpower a crew of high school defenders (Little wasn’t one of them) on one end of the floor and decided to fire a salvo of his own. Little ran the floor and, with Blair lining up to defend in the paint, elevated straight up the ladder and threw down a slam directly on top of Blair.
That’s some feat considering the fact that Blair stands 6-foot-10 and Little is just 6-foot-6 … for now.
Little was rightfully pumped up about the highlight reel play, as he should have been, trotting up the floor while celebrating his unexpected exploits while the UCF players behind gawked and chuckled along with him. As it turns out, Little wasn’t the only one who was excited about his jam, with UCF coaches immediately extending the high schooler a scholarship offer immediately after the scrimmage.
As noted by Home Team Hoops, Little did plenty to justify the scholarship over the course of the camp, though his massive final dunk was probably the final coup that pushed his candidacy over the top.
So, kids, follow Little’s lead. The Class of 2018 star may not end up at UCF, but he knows he’ll be playing Division I basketball following UCF’s bold decision to make its move now. No word on whether Blair was consulted before UCF extended the offer.
