Arguably the play of the night from Friday’s football action actually never happened.
Why’s that? Well, Fremont (Oakland) two-way standout Kenyon McTear reversed field completely, somehow avoided all 11 would-be McClymonds (Oakland) tacklers on a 49-yard touchdown catch that was called back. The penalty negated what was a remarkable display of speed and athleticism by McTear.
As a result, Fremont fell to crosstown rival McClymonds in the Oakland Section final, 24-7. McClymonds’ defense held Fremont to just 112 yards of offense, making McTear’s effort even more impressive.
Perhaps it’s fitting McTear’s 49-yard catch doesn’t show up in the box score, since the kid’s Hudl highlight reel is a thing of beauty, and yet he doesn’t appear on any recruiting list anywhere. Seriously, the kid makes plays all over the field, and opponents require a handful of tacklers to take him down.
