EAST ST. LOUIS — A group of middle school East St. Louis wrestlers experienced victory and disappointment in just a few short hours.
On Sunday, the East St. Louis Wrestling Club defeated O’Fallon to win a chance to compete in the Illinois State Championships being held in Villa Park, Illinois, in two weeks. This will be the first time the wrestling club has qualified for state.
Head coach Rashad Riley took the team to the Collinsville Golden Corral to celebrate their victory. While in the restaurant, someone broke into their two vans and stole most of the team’s equipment.
Without that equipment, the team won’t be able to practice and will have a difficult time competing in the state tournament.
Stolen items include all of their shoes, book bags, wrestling headgear, and some personal electronics.
After word of the robbery got out, the community has come forward to help. Individual donors, corporations and other wrestling teams have stepped up to support the wrestling club. Donations have been coming in and by Tuesday afternoon, enough money had been donated to replace all of the stolen equipment and personal items.
