On Saturday, super hoops recruit Ivan Rabb of Northern California power Bishop O’Dowd connected on a game-winning free throw in overtime of California’s Open Division final, the state’s most prestigious state title game. The free throw came with less than a second remaining in the contest, and made the final score 65-64 in favor of O’Dowd against SoCal athletics powerhouse Mater Dei.
What that, and the final result, fail to make clear is that Rabb gave his fans an enormous scare just seconds before he hit the game-winning freebie by offering up an air ball on the first free throw. You can see video of the attempt, and the eventual winner, above.
That’s about as brutal an air ball as you’ll see on a free throw, and there’s little question that his nerves played a role in the effort. It’s hard to fault Rabb for that, and he and his teammates can just be relieved that he got the result he needed on the next attempt.
