Tre Nixon, a senior wide receiver at Viera High School, was named the 2015 Florida Dairy Farmers Class 7A Player of the Year on Wednesday.
Coaches and media members from around the state nominated players and voted for the award. Nixon received 127 points, ahead of runner-up Davin Schuck (112 points), quarterback of the Columbia team the Hawks defeated on Friday, 42-23 in a state semifinal game. Viera quarterback Hayden Kingston finished third with 71 points.
Hawks head coach Kevin Mays also received 71 points placing third in 7A coach of the year voting. Braden River’s Curt Bradley won that award.
Nixon, who has made 74 catches for 1,224 yards and 18 touchdowns, became a finalist for Mr. Football, which will be determined by another round of voting. He will lead the Hawks against St. Thomas Aquinas in the Class 7A Championship on Friday night at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
In voting for 6A players, Heritage’s Daeshawn Mills placed third with 50 points. Chauncey Gardner of Cocoa was fourth in 4A, with 59 points and Holy Trinity’s Jashaun Corbin (42 points) fourth in 3A.
