1. Panas (17-2, last week’s rank: 1) — Panthers head coach Joe Felipe said after the team’s state final loss, “If you ask me, there was 20 teams here this weekend, and I don’t think we were just No. 2 in Class A. We may have been the second-best team here.” Watching everyone in Glens Falls, he may have been right.

2. Hen Hud (20-3, last week’s rank: 2) — The Sailors went up two games on Owego before falling in the Class B state regional final. Owego ended up winning the state title. Any questions?

3. Yorktown (16-4, last week’s rank: 3) — The Huskers will have some holes to fill in the offseason, particularly breaking in a primary outside hitter with all-state senior Catalina Munoz graduating, but Yorktown has made a habit of developing young talent since head coach Katy Sherwood took over.

4. John Jay (15-4, last week’s rank: 4) — “We’re losing some great talent, but we lost great talent last year,” Indians head coach Tom Rizzotti said. John Jay will lose all-state hitter Taylor McCarthy, all-section hitters Julia Mines and Alex Hall, and setter Amanda Wien. We’ll see what the Indians look like next year.

5. Scarsdale (15-5, last week’s rank: 5) — Much like Hen Hud, the team Scarsdale lost to in five games during the state regional final (Pine Bush) ended up reaching the state final. The Bushmen lost to Connetquot in the Class AA title match.

6. John Jay-East Fishkill (16-6, last week’s rank: 6) — This is Maria Mahoney’s team now — that became abundantly clear. The Patriots’ future looks bright, as evidenced by their quick turnaround under a new coach after a 2013 state semifinals run.

7. Arlington (14-4, last week’s rank: 7) — A senior-laden team, the Admirals will graduate more than half of their players (eight) from this season. Arlington will have some experience coming back, plus a 2,000-plus-student field to choose from when reloading for next year.

8. Ardsley (16-5, last week’s rank: 8) — The Panthers will graduate a good chunk of its height in middle blocker captain Danielle Morano and all-state hitter Nicolina Chenard, but will hold on return all-section hitter Marie McNerney and all-section setter Christina Chu.

Hendrick Hudson beats Ardsley in the Section 1 Class B finals at the Walter Panas High School in Cortland Manor, November 7, 2015.

9. Pelham (15-3, last week’s rank: 9) —The Pelicans will go into a rebuilding phase after graduating 11 of their 14 players, but the three players Pelham returns — Olivia Johnson, Charlotte Krause, and Sydney Shotkoski — boast height (6-feet, 5-foot-11, and 5-foot-7, respectively) and experience. Head coach Mark Finegan will return some nice pieces to the court.

10. Haldane (18-3, last week’s rank: 10) — There will be times in a man’s life when he should admit when he is wrong. I was wrong about Haldane, and was from Day 1. Never thought the Blue Devils would make a run at a state title, let along come within one point of winning.
