Volleyball rankings: Section 1 tournament brings out the best

Week 10 lohud volleyball rankings
All records through Nov. 7

Hen Hud beat Ardsley in the Section 1 Class B finals at Walter Panas High School in Cortlandt Manor on Saturday.

Hen Hud beat Ardsley in the Section 1 Class B finals at Walter Panas High School in Cortlandt Manor on Saturday.

1. Panas (17-1, last week’s rank: 1) —If you watched Panas at all during the season, especially during the Section 1 tournament, and think it shouldn’t be the top-ranked team, get your head examined… quickly.

2. Hen Hud (20-2, last week’s rank: 2) — If you watched Hen Hud at all during the season, especially during the Section 1 tournament, and think it shouldn’t be the second-ranked team, get your head examined… quickly.

3. Yorktown (16-4, last week’s rank: 4) — If there’s only one thing to take away from the Huskers’ season this year, it’s that excellent coaching and team chemistry goes a long way.

4. John Jay (15-4, last week’s rank: 3) — “They said they were ready, but we weren’t,” Indians head coach Tom Rizzotti said after the Class A semifinal sweep to Yorktown. John Jay had a bad match in the biggest match of the year; but that doesn’t erase what it accomplished during the season.

5. Scarsdale (15-4, last week’s rank: t-10) — Not only did I get to see what Scarsdale is truly capable of when healthy on Saturday, but I got to see what it is made of when its back is against the wall. Most teams could’ve folded up shop down two games in the section final, but the Raiders persevered.

6. John Jay-East Fishkill (16-6, last week’s rank: N/R) — Calculating the seeds prior to the tournament, I knew the Patriots would be under-ranked. John Jay-East Fishkill went the distance in its quarterfinal (Clarkstown North), semifinal (Arlington), and finals (Scarsdale) matches of the Section 1 tournament, proving it can hang with anyone in Class AA.

7. Arlington (14-4, last week’s rank: 6) — You’ve got to give head coach Maria Greenwood’s girls credit for battling back to not only force a Game 5 with John Jay-East Fishkill in the Class AA semifinals, but for coming within inches of beating it. I had Arlington winning it all, and I still don’t think that was a bad pick.

8. Ardsley (16-5, last week’s rank: N/R) — The sweep on the scoreboard of Saturday’s Class B section final against Hen Hud doesn’t do the match justice. The Panthers were right there with the Sailors in every game; they just weren’t the better team. Then again, only one team has been better than Hen Hud this year.

9. Pelham (15-3, last week’s rank: 5) — It’s funny how the brackets shake out. Pelham would’ve been better off as a 2- or 3-seed than as the No. 1. Still, the Pelicans lost three matches this year and two of them went five sets; both of which came to teams you see listed above.

10.Haldane (17-2, last week’s rank: t-10) — I knew Keio was as good as it’s ever been this year, but I was still surprised at how good it was. As for Haldane, it’s just a different team without Kelly Vahos. The Blue Devils just play a different style of ball without a 6-foot-2 Division I player in the middle of the court. Different isn’t always bad, as Haldane proved Saturday.
