Fighting Irish, Vikings selected to participate in latest USA TODAY High School Sports contest
Who has the best high school boys basketball program in the country? With the latest installment of its “Best Of” contest series, USA High School Sports is giving fans the opportunity to decide.
The three-round online contest began this afternoon with the start of the state round. Five programs from each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. were selected by a panel of contributors to vie for the prestigious honor.
Two Northeast Ohio squads, St. Vincent-St. Mary and Villa Angela-St. Joseph, were chosen to compete to be named the state’s best boys hoops program. Fans can visit the contest page anytime between now and 2 p.m. on Jan. 20 to vote for their favorite program(s).
The region’s prep basketball fans should not worry about deciding which area representative to support. Each state winner, along with five wildcards, will advance to the next round, so it doesn’t hurt either program to vote for both programs, and it’s possible that both squads could advance. The wildcards will consist of the top five schools that received the highest number of votes, but did not win their state.
The final – and third round – of voting is set to end at 2 p.m. on Feb. 9. The top-three programs at the conclusion of the final round of voting will receive a banner denoting their finish in the contest as well as a monetary donation for their respective athletic department.
