It’s time to vote for the high school athlete of the week. Included in this week’s vote are boys and girls golf, boys and girls bowling, volleyball, swimming, cross country and football.
The winner of the online balloting scores two votes. FLORIDA TODAY staffers cast the other three.
Here are the five nominees:
Dain Rust, Cocoa Beach swimming
Rust set a Cape Coast Conference record, winning the 100 breaststroke in 59.30 seconds at the CCC meet. The record had been established last year by Rockledge High’s Matt Holmes at 59.70.
Dani Keymont, Merritt Island swimming
Keymont improved on her own Cape Coast Conference record in the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.50. She also won the 200 individual medley (2:03.76).
Jashaun Corbin, Holy Trinity football
Corbin ran for 259 yards and five touchdowns to lead Holy Trinity past Agape Christian 44-28. Corbin also has a big role on defense, and he had a key interception in the third quarter that led to his fourth offensive touchdown on the night. The speedy sophomore entered the contest leading Brevard rushers with 785 yards, and now he’s over 1,000 for the season. He scored in every quarter on TD runs of 27, 2, 1, 39 and 40 yards.
Calvin Sierota, Viera boys golf
Sierota won the Cape Coast Conference boys title at Mallards Landing for the second year in a row. He shot a 69 on the par-72 course. His team won the trophy with a score of 285.
Emily Hoenigmann, Covenant Christian volleyball
Hoenigmann amassed big numbers in three matches last week that saw Covenant Christian go 2-1. On Monday, she had 20 kills and 15 digs in a four-set victory over Brevard HEAT. On Tuesday, Hoenigmann had 16 kills, 9 assists and 2 aces in a five-set loss to Pine School. On Friday, she had 11 kills in a three-set win over Community Christian Academy of Stuart.
