TAYLORS – Wade Hampton did enough in the first half and Preston Parks did enough in both halves to keep the Generals unbeaten Wednesday night.
Parks poured in 32 points, and Wade Hampton opened up a big first-half lead and went on to a 70-55 boys basketball victory over Eastside in the final nonregion game for both teams.
Eastside will begin the Peach Blossom AAA Region portion of its schedule on the road Friday against Blue Ridge. Wade Hampton (4-0) will host Boiling Springs Tuesday in its Region 2-AAAA opener.
Parks scored 13 points in the first half, helping the Generals take a 33-14 lead after two quarters.
More than 30 fouls were called in the second half, but Eastside was unable to take advantage of all the free throws. The Eagles made just two of their first 18 attempts from the line and 11 of 32 in all. Wade Hampton was 22 of 35 from the line.
Eastside had the lead down to 49-37 when Nate McElroy scored on a drive with 6:34 remaining, but Caleb Henry made two free throws, and after an Eagles turnover, Parks converted a 3-point play to push the lead back up to 54-37.
Mike Rolf and Luke Brenegan each added 11 points for the Generals. Parks made 8 of 10 from the line, and Brenegan hit 7 of 10.
“I thought we played a very good game in the first half,” Wade Hampton coach Reggie Choplin said, “and obviously in the second half, both teams got a little bit sloppy. Lots of free throws.
“But in the first half I was really proud of our guys. I thought we had a good practice (Tuesday), and we came out with a good bit of energy. I think we were talking on defense. The second half we kind of plodded through, but we did enough to get out of here.”
McElroy led the Eagles with 12 points. Darius Foster had 11 points and Tyius Lewis added 10 points.
The Wade Hampton girls stretched their winning streak to four games with a 61-48 victory.
Savannah Vernon had 13 points, Greyson Boone 12 points and Sierra Foster 11 points for the Generals (4-2).
Jessica Garlington scored 20 points for Eastside (5-3), which trailed 33-20 at halftime.
