Greenbrier recovered from a 14-point deficit after fumbles on its first three possessions and used four touchdowns from running back Jacob Waffird for a late 35-28 win at Whites Creek on Friday.
“My hat’s off to my kids,” Greenbrier coach Kirk Williams said. “They didn’t waver. It took us awhile to get in the flow of things and they came back and played hard.”
Greenbrier (4-4, 2-2 5-4A) got out to a poor start, fumbling the opening kickoff. After coming up with an interception, the Bobcats fumbled again on the very next play. The Bobcats also fumbled on their next possession.
Whites Creek (3-4, 1-2) made the most of the turnovers going up 8-0 on a 25-yard run by Chris Annan, then pushing the lead to 14-0 on a 84-yard touchdown pass from Edward Martin to Thomas Woodard.
“It was three turnovers, bang, bang, bang,” Williams said. “The only thing you can do is try to put that out of your mind, get back in the huddle and get to work.”
Waffird reeled off a 22-yard score followed by 5-yard touchdown run to send the game to halftime tied at 14-14.
Waffird added another touchdown in the third after a 78-yard touchdown run for Whites Creek by Jacob Frazier. The Cobras responded with a 39-yard run by Woodard that put Whites Creek up 28-21.
Greenbrier tied the game with 5:52 remaining on a 6-yard run by Briley Hankins before Waffird put the Bobcats ahead for good with a 35-yard touchdown run that came with less than two minutes left.
The senior finished with 194 yards on 24 carries.
“We just kept driving and did what it took to bring it back on them,” Waffird said. “This is a very big win for us.”
Isaiah Farmer added 112 yards to put the Bobcats over the 300-yard rushing mark. The powerful one-two punch of Waffird and Farmer wore down the Whites Creek defense as the game went on.
“They hit us in the mouth tonight,” Whites Creek coach Tyrus Ward said. “Those guys were running hard. They just kept pounding on us.”
