The Wall field hockey team thrust itself into the state title conversation with an incredible effort on Friday morning against Rumson-Fair Haven, the defending NJSIAA Group II state champion.
Thanks to senior Bernadette Crehan and her game-winning goal in the first half, the No. 1 seed Crimson Knights edged No. 2 seed Rumson-Fair Haven, 1-0, in the NJSIAA Central Group II final.
Crehan scored at 28:15 and junior Hanna Zarrilli had the assist as the Crimson Knights (21-1) avenged their only loss of the season to Rumson-Fair Haven (21-1), which was a 3-0 loss on Oct. 24 in the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals. Since that loss, Wall has won four games in a row.
Wall senior Laird Dunn made eight saves and Rumson-Fair Haven senior Anna Babiak had four saves.
Wall will play in the NJSIAA Group II state semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 11 against West Deptford, the South Group II winner, at a time and location to be determined.
IN OTHER NJSIAA FIELD HOCKEY SECTIONAL FINALS
Summit 2, Freehold 2: Freehold’s Jessica Pianko and Tori Tiefenthaler each scored a goal in regulation and but the No. 1 seed Colonials (13-2-2) lost 3-0 in penalty strokes in the North 2 Group III final.
IN NJSIAA BOYS SOCCER QUARTERFINALS
Freehold Township 1, South Brunswick 0: Chris Hoskins scored the only goal of the game leading the No. 7 Patriots over the No. 2 Vikings in a Central Group IV game. Mike Christina recorded the clean sheet for the Patriots finishing the game with 12 saves.
Holmdel 1, Rumson-FH 0: Leo Nobrega scored off an assist from freshman Joe Arena leading the No. 8 Hornets to the upset Central Group II victory over the No. 1 Bulldogs. Arena sent a through ball to Nobrega in the second half of the game, and Nobrega finished to the lower left corner of the goal. Tyler Marciano recorded the shutout for the Hornets.
Toms River South 3, Central 1: Segio Dippolito and Cameron Geerinck each scored leading the second-seeded Indians over the seventh-seeded Indians in a South Group III game. Dylan Parks also added a goal for Toms River South in the win.
Middletown North 3, Summit 1: Anthony Chiaino scored two goals leading the sixth-seeded Lions over third-seeded Summit in North Group II action. Liam McGregor also added a goal for Middltown North in the win.
Ocean 2, Northern Burlington 0: Jordan Ornowski tallied from a Cosimo Franze cross at 33:49 and Braylin Estrella scored off a James Schutz through ball at 66:00 and Yianni Kavarakas made five saves for the No. 3 seed Spartans (17-4) in their Central Group III win.
Notre Dame 2, Donovan Catholic 1: Jake Mulvaney scored in the third minute and Matt Dalton assisted while Kevin Dillon made six saves for the No. 5 Griffins (12-5-3).
New Brunswick 2, Manalapan 1: Kelvin Ortiz recorded one goal and one assist to lead top-seeded New Brunswick (20-1). Arlin Martinez also scored. Alexis Narvaez made 15 saves. The Zebras will host No. 4 Monroe in the semifinals.
IN NJSIAA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL SECOND ROUND
Toms River South 2, Morris Knoll 1: The No. 12 seed Indians (20-5) were led by junior Danielle Ferreri’s 19 kills, 15 digs and reached the NJSIAA quarterfinals for the first time in school history, according to Toms River South coach Rob Roma. Also, senior Shaniyah Taylor added 12 kills and three blocks while senior Sam Allen registered 38 assists.
Wall 2, Mendham 0: Jess Stansfield had nine kills and 11 digs, Katrina Hand had 13 kills and two digs and Regan Murphy had 26 assists and five digs for the No. 6 seed Crimson Knights (26-2) in a Group III second round game.
